His insights reveal not only the strategies he employs to achieve success but also how he overcomes challenges to tap into the innate abilities that drive impactful outcomes. So Rathish, can you tell me about your current role and responsibilities at Neem?
“Sure! I’m a Senior Project Manager at Neem, and my primary responsibility is overseeing Unilever’s Datalake Delivery as part of the iOPS data program. I’m in charge of delivering the DaaP (Data as a Platform) program, which involves managing global delivery for Trade Promotion Management (TPM) and Trade Promo Analytics (TPA) products. This spans multiple regions, including Europe, the Americas, and Asia.”
That sounds like a lot to manage! What projects are you currently working on?
“Yes, it’s definitely a broad scope. Right now, my focus is on the DaaP program for Unilever. I’m overseeing data ingestion for Unilever Datalake modules – UDL, BDL, DDL to support TPM, TPA and market specific products. It’s a large-scale initiative, but we’ve successfully delivered several projects this year. A recent one that comes to mind was for the France market, where we had to deliver six products, including both local and global ones. The design was complex, and we handled a massive volume of data, but it was rewarding to see it all come together.”
Can you walk me through a typical day for you in this role?
“My day usually starts with reviewing our iOPS JIRA board. This is where we finalise the demands and capacity for upcoming sprints. I meet with stakeholders to discuss their plans and coordinate the data ingestion schedule for the different Data Lake Modules. I spend a significant part of my day communicating with teams, aligning them with client requirements, and ensuring everything stays on track.”
Speaking of stakeholders, it sounds like communication is key. How do you manage and coordinate with different teams?
“Communication is crucial. I use a stakeholder matrix to determine the influence and power of each stakeholder. Once that’s in place, I create a communication plan that outlines how and when to update different stakeholders on the project’s status. This helps me ensure that everyone is on the same page and minimises surprises. Regular updates and transparency help maintain strong relationships with both internal and external teams.”
What’s been your biggest learning experience in this role compared to previous roles?
“The biggest change has been the shift in focus. Before Neem, I was working as a Testing and Commissioning Manager for FIFA 2022 in electrical engineering. That role was very different from the data analytics projects I’m managing now. Adapting to this new field was a challenge at first, but I’ve fully embraced it and learned so much. The complexity of managing data projects is something I’ve come to enjoy, and it’s unlocked new potential in me.”
What skills do you think are essential for your role as a Senior Project Manager?
“I would say stakeholder management, risk management, and communication are the most essential skills. About 90% of my time is spent talking to stakeholders—whether it’s internal teams or external clients. My technical background in coding is helpful to an extent, but the ability to manage people and expectations is what really drives success.”
You mentioned earlier that believing in yourself is important. What has been your biggest personal challenge in this role?
“One of the major challenges was transitioning from a technical engineering role to managing data analytics projects. There was some initial self-doubt, but I pushed through it by focusing on the bigger picture. Having the support of my family and colleagues helped boost my confidence. They’ve always believed in me, and that’s been a huge motivator.”
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to be in your position?
“Be professional, listen carefully, and take both criticism and encouragement equally. Keep learning and don’t be afraid to ask for feedback—and act on it. We all make mistakes, but the key is not to repeat them. Also, maintaining good relationships with your team is crucial. You can’t achieve success alone, so always value the people you work with.”
Looking ahead, what are your future goals, both personally and professionally?
“Personally, I want to continue spending quality time with my family. They’ve been my biggest support system throughout my career. Professionally, I’d love to take on more mentorship responsibilities, helping junior team members grow. Eventually, I see myself in a director-level position at Neem, sharing the knowledge I’ve gained and continuing to drive success for the company.”
Do you have a mantra or quote that guides you in your work?
“Yes, I live by this: ‘Be sincere in what you do—you will go a long way. There are no shortcuts.’ It’s a simple but powerful principle that has helped me throughout my career.”
Outside of work, how do you unwind and recharge?
“I’m quite a gym enthusiast—I work out five days a week and mix in cricket and badminton on the weekends. I also enjoy trekking and exploring new places. Physical activity is a huge part of how I recharge. It helps clear my mind and keeps me focused when I’m back at work. I find that maintaining this balance of fitness and relaxation helps me stay sharp professionally and gives me the energy I need to manage multiple projects.”
That sounds like a great way to rejuvenate! How do you think these activities contribute to your professional development?
“Staying physically active helps me stay disciplined and manage stress better. When I’m recharged, I can approach work challenges with a fresh perspective. It’s amazing how much clarity you can get after a workout or a weekend spent outdoors. It keeps me motivated and ready to tackle whatever comes next.”
Thanks so much, Rathish. Any final thoughts or advice for the Neem team?
“Just keep learning, stay positive, and remember that teamwork makes all the difference. We’re all here to support one another and achieve great things together.”
